Small computerized consumer devices and hi-tech personal appliances rapidly moving from the desks of research labs into stores shelves and into our daily life. Various platforms ranging from PDAs, embedded computers in cameras, cars, or mobile phones, up to high performance wearable computers will become essential tools in many situations for private and professional use. This development will continue and computers will start to vanish into the environment, becoming a part of it. Computational power and networking capabilities are then becoming ubiquitous. However, the combination of mobile and ubiquitous computing is emerging as a promising new paradigm. Through the use of mobile devices and devices embedded in the surrounding physical environments, users can be provided with transparent computing and communication services at all times and in all places. The complexity of providing such services stems from the fact that the communication devices and the objects with which they interact may both be mobile. It is obvious that with the accelerating trends towards mobile, ad-hoc, and wireless networks, mobile computing and ubiquitous networking will play an important role in future global networks. The implementation of such a paradigm requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services, and an understanding of the cross-layer interactions between all of these components. This workshop makes a bridge between issues with software and hardware challenges through mobile and ubiquitous communications.
